Just to prove that I'm not dead, here is Billie so far. The lower half of her face needs to be completely redone, so I just cropped it out because otherwise people would be like "her mouth sucks!" and I wouldn't get any other advice because the suckiness is so distracting. But anyway.
The main advice I'm looking for is what to do with the background. Should I leave it white or do something else? Also, pointers on the hair would be very helpful. And any other problems you see.
Thanks!
All done in charcoal (what an experiment I am not repeating)
This is a truly awesome start so far.. very lifelike. I wouldn't leave the background white. I think I would put something there, but try to make it out of focus and not too detailed so as not to distract from her face. You seem to have a good grasp on the hair, so I would just say add more details (individial strands, more exaggerated shadows/highlights, etc.). Hope this helps!

Thank you! Although I think the "sleek rendering" you speak of may actually be my lack of detail compared to places I've actually worked on...if that looks intentional, great!
